KALVEBOD BRYGGE HAS WON BERLINGSKE'S "CITY'S BEST ARCHITECTURE" 2022 AWARD

 

Kalvebod Brygge (KB32) has won the AOK (Alt om København) award for City's Best Architecture 2022. The winner of this award is determined by the readers, who nominate their favorites, which are then evaluated by an appointed jury. The final evaluations lead to the nominations in the competition, where both the jury and readers cast their votes on who, what, and which they think is the best.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Kalvebod Brygge has undergone a comprehensive transformation, resulting in not just one award nomination and win, but two.

 

The office building has received new facades, new interiors, stairs, etc., which have enhanced the building's quality. However, the developers and architects focused on and based the project on Ole Hagen's rhythmic and unsentimental modernism, choosing to retain his previous designs as a foundational element of the project.

 

The faithfulness to the original construction and the changes by VLA have culminated in transforming the former 'ugly duckling' into a modern headquarters, elevating and highlighting the architectural and aesthetic look of the area.

PROJECT DETAILS

For the project, Hi-Con has contributed with facade elements, balconies, stairs, and columns in Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC).

 

Facade elements:

 

Hi-Con has supplied 70 facade elements, consisting of 40 mm front panels cast with a wood structure that resembles the building's original wooden plank surface. Additionally, the facades are insulated and self-supporting, meaning they can bear the weight of the stairs and balconies without additional load. They are also produced with inserts.

 

The stairs and balconies are mounted using simple steel angles.

 

Stairs and columns:

 

In addition to the facade elements, Hi-Con will also deliver both a staircase and columns for the project. The staircase, which will be placed along one gable, consists of 3 stair elements with flat undersides and 3 landings. The staircase will be supported by 6 columns measuring 220 x 220 mm. Additionally, the staircase will have a width of approximately 3.95 m, a total horizontal length of about 24.6 m, and a thickness of around 170 mm. The stairs will also feature a profiled surface, which is a Hi-Con standard, and the undersides will be smoothed.

SLIM BALCONIES

In addition to supplying 1300 sqm of facade elements, Hi-Con also delivered four 18-meter-long balconies and a straight staircase over 24 meters long for the KB32 renovation project. The elements are made of Ultra High Performance Concrete, enhancing not only the building's aesthetics but also its functionality. Their self-supporting design and support columns allow the elements to be installed without adding extra load to the building.

 

The balconies are attached to the facade elements, which also provide support, while the staircase is supported by columns, completing the transformation of KB32 into a modern and functional workspace. Would you like to read more about the project? Click the link below:
