Parapet balconies with brick shells in Ultra High Performance Concrete for Kronløbsøen

BALCONY SOLUTION IN ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE

When the new island neighborhood 'Kronløbsøen' is completed, it will feature balconies in Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC). Hi-Con will deliver and install 237 balconies with embedded brick shells for Nordhavn's new island in 2022.

Kronløbsøen resembles a monolith rising from the water, with six buildings carved out of a single piece. The buildings consist of: Horisonten, Klinten, Oasen, Klippedalen, Kysten, and Vandkanten. The island is inspired by the geological deposits seen on the Danish coast, such as Møns Klint.

Behind the new island neighborhood is the project company Kronløbsøen Projekt P/S, designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter A/S and COBE, and constructed by NCC Danmark. This impressive project will complete the vision for the Århusgadekvarteret in Copenhagen's Nordhavn—a vision that Hi-Con is excited to contribute to.

TOTAL ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS

The choice of Hi-Con as a subcontractor is based on total economic considerations, where both time and practicality are significant factors. When Hi-Con is involved as a subcontractor in a construction project, customers are offered a comprehensive package of consulting, design, manufacturing, delivery, and final installation of the elements. Thus, Hi-Con can save its customers unnecessary subcontracting divisions and the extra time and resources often associated with handling and coordinating multiple subcontractors.

ELEMENTS IN UHPC

Although the construction will be completed with 237 balconies in Ultra High Performance Concrete, the balconies will be delivered in 287 balcony elements, each consisting of one balcony slab and three balustrades with embedded brick shells on the outside. Due to the length and shape of the balconies, some of them will be divided into multiple elements and subsequently assembled during installation. The balconies measure up to 13 meters in length and 4.5 meters in depth, with several of the balconies wrapping around the corners of the buildings. The balcony base will be manufactured with a slab thickness of 100-125 mm and cast in gray Ultra High Performance Concrete.

We are incredibly proud to contribute to yet another climate-conscious quality construction in this area. Neighboring Kronløbsøen is Fortkaj, which was recently completed as a DGNB Gold-certified project.

PROJECT INFO:

Kronløbsøen is a 9,500 m² island located in Copenhagen

The buildings on the island consist of 23,700 m² of residential space and 330 m² of restaurants, cafés, or similar establishments situated on the ground floor of the buildings.

Additionally, Klippedalen includes a resident house of 93 m²

The island will be equipped with an underground parking garage below the water surface, comprising 33,000 m² of the total project

The residences are owner-occupied apartments, ranging from 50-200 m², each with at least one attached balcony.

PROJECT DETAILS:

For the project, Hi-Con has delivered 287 UHPC elements which together form 237 UHPC CRCi2® balconies.

The balconies are designed with a slope towards the embedded drain, and a raised edge along the sides of the balcony.

Additionally, the balconies have a slab thickness of approximately 110-130 mm, with embedded brick shells on the underside of the balcony and the outer sides of the balustrades.

The surface is finished with standard profiling.
