Hi-Con specializes in high-performance concrete and is driven by the desire to challenge known forms, functions, and aesthetics in construction. A perfect match with the architectural ambitions for the AARhus project, which required special skills and unconventional solutions.

Hi-Con lives and breathes Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), characterized by different and superior properties compared to regular concrete. The extensive expertise gained through countless projects makes the North Jutland company a competent and creative partner for construction projects.

HIDDEN COLUMNS

UHPC is not only the supporting material in BIG's AARhus project but also plays a central role in the aesthetic expression. This includes the balconies, which Hi-Con has helped to specially develop to meet a high architectural ambition level.

"We have, among other things, cast the balconies upside down to support the aesthetic design. Additionally, L-columns and some special railing guides have been hidden as part of the construction and under a wooden cladding that also covers a unique drainage system," explains Søren Mosegaard.

"It is incredibly nice to work with an architect like BIG, who knows exactly what they want. They also understand the importance of utilizing our knowledge early in the process so that we are not constrained by fixed parameters," he adds.

SEAMLESS GREEN ROOF

Hi-Con's pragmatic approach to challenges is also evident in another unconventional Ultra High Performance Concrete solution delivered for the AARhus project.

"A green roof was to be planted on the uppermost level of the building, and we were asked if we could provide a roof slab for the purpose. We came up with a solution where we produced three elements that were assembled next to the building and bonded together with a JointCast, allowing us to hoist a single large element that is completely water and airtight to the top of the building a few days later," explains Søren Mosegaard.
