Major bridge renovation in Copenhagen

In the heart of Copenhagen, around the small island where the Opera is located, there was a need for extensive renovation of five bridges. These bridges provide essential access for motor vehicles to the Opera and therefore play a crucial role in the island's infrastructure, making it necessary to preserve them safely and durably.

The original bridges by the Opera were constructed with oak beams, but this material could not withstand the maritime environment and intensive traffic in the area. Therefore, the decision was made to renovate all five bridges.

The requirements for the bridge renovation were numerous, but notably important was that the new surfacing had to preserve the original dimensions of the bridges while not exceeding the load-bearing capacity of the original steel structure.

This challenge was solved with a bridge solution in Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) from Hi-Con.

Bridge Solution in Ultra High Performance Concrete

Ultra High Performance Concrete was chosen for the bridges by the Opera due to its longevity of over 100 years in highly aggressive environments, while meeting the weight and dimensional requirements of the beams. Additionally, Hi-Con had the capability to assist in designing the UHPC beams to meet all specifications.

For the renovation project, Hi-Con has supplied 1265 UHPC CRC beams for a total of 5 bridges.

The use of UHPC for the bridges by the Opera has not only ensured their future lifespan but also preserved their aesthetic integrity and functionality for years to come.
