CONCEPT BALCONIES IN ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE

When it comes to construction projects, it can be challenging to meet the demands for cost-effectiveness, durability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Balconies, in particular, are a crucial element in any construction project and require a solution that can meet all these needs while also offering flexibility in terms of design and installation. At Hi-Con, we understand the importance of these requirements, which has led to the development of our concept balcony.

 

Our concept balconies are made of Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) CRC i2. This type of concrete is characterized by a strength range of 130-200 MPa, setting it apart from other concretes such as fiber concrete and high-strength concrete, which have a strength range of 50-90 MPa. With our concept balconies, we offer a lightweight and slim solution without complicated joints. 

Using UHPC, you also get a maintenance-free balcony slab with a fireproof construction. Our concept balconies are Denmark's first mass-produced standard balcony in UHPC, and when you choose our concept balconies, you get the same material properties that you experience with our custom balcony solutions.

 

What sets our concept balconies apart from other standard balconies is the combination of high-quality materials, expert craftsmanship, and design flexibility. Our CE-marked balconies come in various sizes and colors and can be customized with different surface textures to match your building design and vision. Our concept balconies are available in various sizes, ranging from 1.6 x 2.6 meters to 2 x 5 meters, and come in gray and light colors. Additionally, we offer four different surface textures that not only enhance the visual appeal but also provide a non-slip surface.

SURFACES - TEXTURE AND COLORS

Ultra High Performance Concrete can, like regular concrete, be customized to achieve the aesthetic expression you desire. The standard colors are gray and light, but there is also the option to color and texture the concrete. Finally, the aggregate can be varied so that the surface appears rougher than standard concrete.

ADVANTAGES OF CONCEPT BALCONIES

  • We understand that price is a significant factor in any construction project. That’s why we offer our concept balconies at competitive prices without compromising on quality.

  • We recognize the importance of time in any construction project and strive to offer our customers quick delivery times.

     

    To give you an idea of what to expect, we typically estimate that the design phase takes around 10-12 weeks. Following this, the pre-production phase, which includes mold making, usually takes 4-6 weeks before actual production begins. Our production capacity allows us to cast between 1 and several elements per day, depending on the project's scope, the size of the elements, and the number of available molds. As a standard, we usually cast one element per day, four times a week.

     

    We work hard to ensure that our customers receive their UHPC elements on time, contributing to smooth construction projects that stay on schedule. Our goal is to provide you with the confidence that comes with knowing we understand the importance of efficient delivery times in the construction industry.

     

    It is worth noting that delivery times can naturally vary depending on the project's scope and the design and complexity of the elements. For less complex projects, shorter time frames may apply.

  • Our concept balconies are designed to be slim and elegant with a slab thickness as little as 60 mm, providing a lightweight solution.

  • We offer a complete solution for your balcony needs, including a range of sizes, railings, and surface textures to customize the appearance of your balcony.

  • We stand behind the quality of the materials we use and offer a 5-year warranty against delamination on the glass used.

  • Due to the material's extreme strength and density, we use less material compared to similar elements in regular concrete, which means we use a very small cover layer on the reinforcement. Additionally, a study shows that the production of Hi-Con concept balconies emits 22.8% less CO2 than a steel balcony. Read more about the study here.

THOUGHTFUL CONCEPT BALCONIES

At Hi-Con, we take our responsibility seriously and aim to provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional concrete and steel. Our concept balconies in UHPC guarantee a lifespan of 100+ years, and the balcony slab requires no maintenance. This means that replacements or repairs are needed less frequently than traditional balconies, saving resources and minimizing waste. The extreme strength of UHPC also allows for the creation of slimmer and lighter balconies, reducing the amount of material required for a balcony. This decreases the overall environmental impact and energy consumption in production. Additionally, a study shows that the production of Hi-Con concept balconies emits 22.8% less CO2 than a steel balcony. Read more about the study here.

 

In most cases, we work with balconies that are installed after the building structure is completed, making the balconies relatively easy to remove if the building is decommissioned. By making our concrete elements easy to disassemble and reuse, we can minimize waste and use resources more efficiently. This allows us to be an active participant in the circular economy and contribute to a more sustainable construction industry.

 

Our high cement content is by far the most significant factor for our environmental impact, and therefore we have long been working on various options to reduce the amount of cement. The latest initiative is the introduction of CRC i3, a mortar with larger aggregates. By adding larger amounts of aggregate to the mix, we achieve a 30% reduction in cement consumption. This composition not only allows us to achieve significant savings in cement consumption but also improved strength and rigidity – all at a relatively modest cost. An alternative strategy to minimize cement consumption is to replace the cement with a corresponding filler of the same particle size. Initial experiments with limestone filler and marble powder show that by replacing 30% of the cement, we see no reduction in strength.
